Kobalt 15 in 1 Multi-tool: “Above Par But Barely” by Nutnfancy

At how good is the Kobalt 15 in 1 multi-tool? Well it seems to provide quality above its price point but it has issues. The 9.6 oz weight is too heavy for the tool set it provides, it’s a very wide 20mm (and yet has no scissors!), and NONE of the tools lock. Also it only carries one tiny phillips and stamped out (not machined quality) driver, its serrated blade is awful. All of its drivers are too polished and radiused which make them slip of the fasterner. They are stubby as well and will provide no reach into tight areas. Also the Kobalt’s low quality SS main blade arrives dull and will get that way again quickly, lacking a quality steel. However there a few upsides: the pliers seems excellent and precise and they cut well (shown). Also the can opener/driver, copying Victorinox is good. The polished exterior should resist rust well and it does look high quality. The provided sheath is good, the tool sets have individual springs, and they do engage well into detent. But, as is the current hand tool craze, those silly rubber inserts find their way on to this Kobalt tool as well though. They will stain, grab at cloth, and are not necessary. For a thrasher or maybe a seldom-used preparedness kit MDMT, the Kobalt 15 in 1 may work just fine. It is designed to capture the attention of the general tool buying individual at Lowes Home Improvement Store and give occasional service. However I think most users would be better served steering clear of this offering and saving up

hey Nut’n!! i looked at those at lowes the other day and was wondering how good they were. no way in hell will i buy one now. the flat head screw drivers edges are rounded? only thing that looked decent was the file. i hate cheap tools! they break at the worst times, they don’t last long, and in general are pieces of crap. you might as well use the dollars spent on them for fuel in a fire, flush down the toilet, or just rip them up. thanks for the review!

@sarsattacks if that place for cheap tools is at the bottom of a lake or ocean where your tool probably is, i agree with you!

i’ll stay with my SOG multi tool. Well made, lightweight, robust and no extra nonsense or fancy design.

I’ve had one of these for a few years now. I keep it in my truck’s emergency kit. I have used it to swap out a battery, and do some minor tasks. The nice thing about the Kobalt is I don’t mind abusing it a bit. I actually used it to baton some kindling. I wouldn’t do that with my LM Wave.

Q – Whats the best survival knife?
A – Whatever knife you happen to have access to when the need arises.

Q – Is a cheap no-brand MT better than a Leatherman Charge TTi?
A – No, but it is better than no MT at all.

I have an Asaklitt MT that is much like this one (but it also has a LED light in the handle). It is inferior to all Leatherman tools, but it sure rocks the heck out of having no MT at all (which many of the haters/knowitalls never have).

I bought the BLAST on Nutn’s review and man was that money well spent. It’s a high quality Versatile MT. I’ve “Saved the day” on many occasions with it. This tool? You’d probably lose the day with it. :/

I am a multi-tool addict… and I’m not attracted to it – sorry. However, I do agree with the philosophy of use behind a cheap multi-tool like this, and I have a few of them exactly for those purposes.
